  Casino Party Games - Blackjack

Blackjack

Blackjack or "21" is widely popular in American casinos. Casinos generally have more Blackjack tables than any other table game. The game dates back to our frontier days. The goal of Blackjack is to beat the dealer. To beat the dealer the player must have a card total higher than the dealer without going over 21.

How to Play Blackjack

In Blackjack the player's hand is determined by the total of the cards added togther. Two through Ten are counted as the value on on the card. Face cards are counted as 10, and Aces can count as 1 or 11, depending on which is better for the player. Each player has their own betting spot. The player places thier bet in this spot. The dealer then deals each player two cards face up and himself 2 cards with on of those cards face down.

At this point the dealer checks to see of anyone, including himself has Blackjack. Blackjack is when on the first two cards dealt the player total 21. To have 21 on the first two cards, the player must have an Ace and a Ten(inlcuding face cards) card. If a player has Blackjack, then they win 3 to 2. If the dealer has Blackjack, then everyone loses. If a player and the dealer have blackjack then they tie or "Push". If neither dealer or any of the players have Blacjkack, then the dealer goes the player decision part of the game.

Each player has the oppoortunity to take more cards, called a "Hit" in hopes of improving their hand total. They signal the dealer by tapping the table. When they are satisfied with their total, they "Stand". They signal the dealer by waving their hand over the cards. If the player's total goes over 21, the lose.

After the players have made their decisions the dealer then plays his hand. The dealer must draw cards until the the dealer's hand totals 17 or better. Once the dealer has reached 17 or better, he must stand. Any player with a total higher then the dealer's wins even money. If they tie, it is push. If the dealer goes over 21, then the dealer busts and eveyone who still has a bet, wins even money.

Special Hands

Blackjack has several special hands. These hand are Splits and Double Downs. In a Split, if the player's first two cards are the same value, like two 8's or two 3's, they can double their bet and the dealer will split the hand into two seperate hands that are played individually. A player can split Aces with two special rules. When Aces are split the player get only 1 card. If the player receives a 10 cards, it is not considered Blackjack, just 21.

A Double Down is a bet in which the player doubles thier bet, and recieves only 1 card. This bet is usually done when the player's first two cards total 9, 10 or 11 and the dealer's up card is not a 9,10 or Ace.

A system called Basic Strategy is the best strategy to use in Blackjack. If you are in a real casino, you can go to the gift shop and get a wallet size card that has all the correct plays depending on your cards and the dealer's up card.

Below is a simplified strategy that works well

9 or lower - hit

10 or 11 - double down if your cards add up to more than the dealer’s upcard. Sponsored Links

12 thru 16 - hit when dealer's upcard is 7 or higher; stand otherwise.

17 or higher - Stand

With Soft hands, things change a bit. A soft hand includes any hand that uses an Ace as an 11 instead of a 1, such as a “Soft 17”, which includes and ace and a 6.

Soft 13 thru 18 – Double down when dealer's upcard is 5 or 6

Soft 17 or lower – hit

Soft 18 hit when dealer's card is six or less; stand when dealer's card is seven or more

Soft 19 or higher – stand

Pairs

Always split Aces and eights

Never split 10s, 4s or 5s

Split all other pairs when dealer’s upcard is 6 or less
